4200 : a gas - rich early - type galaxy formed via a major merger
We present the result of radio and optical observations of the S0 galaxy IC 4200. We find that the galaxy hosts 8.5×10 9 M ⊙ of H rotating on a ∼90 deg warped disk extended out to 60 kpc from the centre of the galaxy. Optical spectroscopy reveals a simple-stellar-population-equivalent age of 1.5 Gyr in the centre of the galaxy and V-and R-band images show stellar shells. Ionised gas is observ...
متن کاملFormation of a Spiral Galaxy in a Major Merger
We use numerical simulations to examine the structure of merger remnants resulting from collisions of gas-rich spiral galaxies. When the gas fraction of the progenitors is small, the remnants structurally and kinematically resemble elliptical galaxies, in agreement with earlier work. However, if the progenitor disks are gas-dominated, new types of outcomes are possible. In fact, we show that a ...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe peculiar galaxy IC 1182 : An ongoing merger ? ⋆
High resolution broad and narrow band images and long slit spectroscopy of the peculiar galaxy IC 1182 are presented. The analysis of the broad band images reveals a distorted morphology with a large, heavily obscured disk-like structure and several knots in the central region. Galactic material, some of it in the form of two slender tails, is detected well beyond the main body of the galaxy. T...
متن کاملTwo Disk Components from a Gas Rich Disk-Disk Merger
We employ N-body, smoothed particle hydrodynamical simulations, including detailed treatment of chemical enrichment, to follow a gas-rich merger which results in a galaxy with disk morphology. We trace the kinematic, structural, and chemical properties of stars formed before, during, and after the merger. We show that such a merger produces two exponential disk components, with the older, hotte...
